Ask Me No Question

During the book Ask Me No Question from pages 150-159 they were trying to get ready for the court case. While ma was trying to get everyone else ready she forgot about her self and dad was looking sharp, even though he put on the same clothing that he wore for Aisha's graduation. Aisha wore her dress from her graduation, too. When Nadira was ready she wore the dress that her mom gave her. Then when mom got dress Aisha, Nadira and Abba was looking at ma because she was so beautiful and then they went to the court case. As all of them were at the court case they ask Aisha to step up next to the judge and tell what she knew. She told them about how Abba's name doesn't end with an e but an a. They said yes that's true, but if it was a typo. Aisha said if you guys really wanted the guy you would get his name right. She went onto point all the reasons they were wrong for keeping Abba and that they had the wrong guy. In the end, they let Abba go.

Night (the second half) by Elie Wiseal

The second half of Night by Elie Wisel continues to tell of the depressing sad true story about a boy who was taken to a concentration camp because he was a Jew. This took place during world war II. Elie was only 15 when taken to the camp along with his Mother sisters and His Father. After arriving he was separated from his mother and sisters. His father and him were together for most of his time at the camp. Every time that the Nazi's separated the Jews into groups they would always find each other. They were able to stay together and form their own groups.
Life in the camp was horrible. For example, if they didn't obey orders they would be shot, striped, lashed, striped and lashed at the same time, or burned in the furnace. They did the same thing if they were sick or to week to work. They also limited their portion of food smaller, and smaller, and smaller as if they want them to starve. Besides the portion of food it also smelled like corpses.

A question that I'm wondering are there other books similar to Night?

Even though this book was painful to read I think is good to know what happened or what went on in the concentration camp. I recommend the painful but great book to anyone who's up for it. THE END

The book Beowulf is about a viking village that gets attack by two ugly monsters, Grendal and his mother. The first attack happened when everyone was asleep. Grendal snatched two people and brought them back to his den. Before the next attack happened, Beowulf and everyone else pretended to sleep so when Grendal attacked they would be ready. Soon enough Grendal came and Beowulf jumped on his back. About five minutes of trying not to fall off, Beowulf got a hold of Grendal's left arm. He started pulling. Tearing skin, tissue, and, muscle, Grendal's arm snapped off! Grendal left to his den. When he got there, he died from loss of blood, his mother wanted revenge. The next night the vikings went to the lake and Grendals mother pulled Beowulf down into a cave. Beowulf sliced her head off. as soon as the rest of the vikings were getting worried, Beowulf bobbed out of the water holding the head of the monster. Beowulf killed a dragon, but his arm got stuck in his mouth, so he had to cut it off. Beowulf died from the loss of blood, but thanks to him, the vikings got all the dragon's gold.
I had two questions and a reaction.

My two questions were one, why didn't they just lift the dragon's mouth open instead of cutting his arm, and two, why did Grendal attack in the first place?

My reaction was surprised because he could've opened the dragon's mouth.

BEOWULF

The book i just finished is called Beowulf, the Graphic Novel. I really good enjoyed the book. It is about a warrior who is really strong and fights for his village. His village gets attacked by the monsters called grendals. The battles get very brutal.

Because the book is a graphic novel the illustrations were very cool and detailed. For example, in one of the battles it shows Beowulf ripping grendall's arm off. The scenery in the castle is detailed showing the ins an out's along with the light fixtures. It gives you a real sense of what things look liked during that time. Also, the armor and wardrobe was very detailed.

I'm still wondering how Beowulf had enough strength to rip of the grendals arm.

I was really suprised on how good this book was because when I first picked it up it didn't give me the best first impression. I have read a lot of graphic novels and my first reaction made me think it wouldn't be as good as the others.

January Sparrow

So i have finally finished the book:) Overall January Sparrow made me feel allot of different emotions because at some points of the book it was really sad but at other parts it was really happy.

So how the book ended is that after Sadie and her family moved Sadie began school and she made a best friend named Polly. Sadie and Polly did every thing together including watching Sadie's first snowfall because she has never seen snow before. When Sadie first got into school she had to tell every one she was from Illinois so people wouldn't figure out that she was a runaway slave. After a few months of living in there new place Sadie's mom had a baby named Francis even no that's what the old masters name. The mom named her Francis so no one would be afraid of the name anymore when they think of that name she wants them to think of there sweet baby girl.-Meghan(:<3

I was very pleased Jeanne ended up with a good life and someone to take care of her. The author is amazing for constructing such literature about her war child Jeanne

Summary:
Summer just passed. Anne left but at least Anne was no longer trap in Amsterdam the mercy. Things here in Amsterdam gotten worst. Four hundred Jews were arrested from Old Jewish Quarter of Amsterdam. Was there trouble coming? If Amsterdam was being bombed the Goslar family would not be able to get into the public air-raid shelter because Jew were forbidden from all. Winter as came. There was no explosion. Yet there was still fear. The Goslar family was taking to a theater near the zoo. Solder's told them to go home because it was an Assembly place for the Jews.
Questions:
1. Why can't the Goslar family visit the theater when it is for Jews?
2. Was Anne really in a better place?
Connection;
When Hannah said Anne is in a better place it reminded me when I loose my god mother that she is in a better place and will always be with me just like Anne with Hanna. Also when the solders told them they couldn't visit the theater. It reminded me of a time when Rosa Parks was ask to move from her bus seat.

Jazmin's Notebook

SUMMERY

In the begining of the story Jazmin sits on her porch and writes about what happens in the neighbor hoods. She loves reading and writing poems she has a sister cece a grandma and Jabari. She sad because her dad died in a car crash a couple years ago. She has a couple friends in school that always keep her laughing when Jazmin didn't have no paper she asked people then she looked in the garbage and found a piece so she wrote all her thoughts on the paper. Then the last part I read was when Jazmin and her friend tried to ditch school so they went to Carltons house and hung out there. Jazmin is tired of people making fun of her calling her names and by names meaning goody 2 shoe and a nerd because she's really smart if I were Jazmin I would tell my parents and not let this teasing thing go on any more.

REACTION

I thought she was a good person until she ditched school where you going 2 live where you going 2 sleep and where you going 2 get a job with no education.

Chinese Cinderella/ Poor 4 year old

I have started reading Chinese Cinderella. I read charter 1-10. This is a true story about the author Adeline Yen Mah real life. When i started reading thid book i was worried about the little girl named Adeline. She was an unwanted daughter because she was "bad luck". This was because when her mom gave birth to her she died. She grows up being blamed for her mothers death. The only one that looks out for her is her Aunt Baba. One reason she looked out for her was because not getting marry at any point so, instend she was order to take care of her.I think that was good idea cuz if she was going to be unwanted their is someone to love her. After her mom died her dad married Niang (step mother). Niang had two kids that are spoil.Niang didn't want father to worry about the other kids but, about her and money. The other five are tried like one preason. Father worked in the office. Then he stared working with these powerful chinese people. Something has happen. They had to move or father would go to jail. When they move Adenline becomes more less depend on then the other when, they move to a place french.

Why doesn't father say anything to Niang about being fare with all of his kids?

Why can't they have someone to drive them if Ye Ye is giving them money?

My reaction to big sister telling a four (Adenline) year old that she is a "bad luck". this is because a little kid can be marked for life. meaning that she can mess her life by believing that she was the reason why everyone is sad, and have a bad life.

Right now January's family is running away from the slave hunters. They can't bring January because they don't know where he is since he was caught and beat by the slave catchers.

I find this book to be very disturbing because there is so much detail about the things that happened. For example, when January was getting beat the book explains every whip and how the mark looked. It describes that when they hit him and it tore his skin so bad you could see his ribs. Then they would whip him the other way so his skin would stick up in squares. After they were done beating him they would rub salt and pepper on his back.

I can't believe that something like this could of really happened. And I'm glad that it isn't that way anymore. This book reminds me of the Surrender Tree. Both of the books tell a story about slavery and what happened after slaves in both Cuba and in America were freed.

Meghan

january Sparrow

Now in the book Sadie and her mom ran away, now there in this place where all run away slaves are so they can have a nice place to sleep and something good to eat. January is still missing because the slave catchers haven't let him go yet.My prediction for the upcoming pages in the book is that there going to find January in the safe place and there going to live there and the rest of the book is going to be about there new lives. This book has gotten happier since January was beaten because now his family is happy because there not in slavery anymore.

Over a Thousand ...

What shocked me the most in Part 2 of the book is that the president has been murdered. Jeanne was sleeping in her room when Jando comes in her room and wakes her up tears in his eyes. Jeanne thought he was playing around with her but she saw the tears in his eyes and new it was real. The Burundi president was murdered to. In the morning so was the prime minster.

Things got crazy during this section of the book. I was dying to see if the family dies in a fire or gets killed. Then I thought this was Jeanes dream then I finally figured out this was real life.

QUESTION

Who are the Tutis and are the bad?

Is Aniane a Hutu?

I predict Jando is killed because of Jeanne

In this book it's about a girl named Nadira, her sister Aisha her parents Ma and her father Abba. They are all illigel immigrants from Bangladesh and need to move to Canada. But when they're in a car traveling to Canada Abba tries to renew his Visa card and he gets caught by a guard and now he has to go to INS detention. Nadira on the other hand has to try her best by bringing the family back together again rather then breaking it apart even more! QUESTIONS:

Why did Ma have to stay back?
Will the girls make it?
When will Abba return?
Will Aisha graduate?

Connection: When Ma stayed back it reminded me when me and my brother had to leave my mom behind at the hotel in PA. While He drove me to NYC and mom stood in the hotel with dad. It gave me a tingle feeling in my stomach.

SUMMERY

Now what i found out is that when Jazmin is really sad she has her friend to keep her smiling . She know lives with her sister CeCe because their mother is in the hospital and their dad died in a car crash a couple of years back. So things are pretty tough because they have no mom. Jazmin sits on her stoop at her house and writes what goes on there. Jazmin likes to write poetry in that notebook with her secrets.

When Jazmine was writing in her notebook it's like i was there watching her write. I could feel their pain and i almost cried when I read that about her parents.

QUESTIONS

How old is Jazmin?
How old is CeCe?

Jazmin Notebook, Aniyah

I just started reading the book Jazmin's Notebook. Jazmin Shelby lives with her sister and it's tough living without a mom or dad. I found out that she writes poetry and sits on the step outside her house and writes in her notebook.

OVER A THOUSAND HILLS I WALK WITH YOU

The book I am reading is
Over A Thousand Hills I walk With You by Hanna Jansen.
This book is about a girl named Jeanne who has a typical life she has a family a home
education and all that other stuff. My favorite character is Jando he is Jeanne's brother he is a
loving person who cares for his sisters Jeanne and Teya. Jeanne's mom Florence is a 4-6 grade teacher
and there dad is a self centered learner.

This book is challenging but confusing like for one thing, Is the author a poet?
Second Why are the elders so strict.

I predict havoc will spread across the land and every one will die soon enough except Teya, Jando.

Ask Me No Questions By: Marina Budhos

In this book ( Ask Me No Questions) there is a girl named Nadira. Her and her family are immigrants from Bangladesh. Her and her sister Aisha are on their own driving from the border of Canada to New York after their dad is arrested and detained for trying to cross the border with an expired visa. There dad is staying in a jail and there mother is staying in a homeless shelter in Canada. They are going back to New York so Aisha can finish up high school and get into college.

Prediction:  I think that their aunt and uncle is going to make Nadira get a job and work for the money to bail their father out of jail and Aisha is not going to have to work at all.

After all of this I have one main question: Why wouldn't the mother go with the two girls because 1. If something were to happen to them, no one is there to help them. And 2. The mother is staying at a homeless shelter and if she stayed with her daughters, she would have money, a house, clothes, and food to eat.

The Magic Poet

In the final pages of the book the Cuban boy has a dream that he and his family were free and they lived in a hut. They had no one to be afraid of it was just him and his family. He wished that this dream he had was real not in his head that would have made him happy if the dream was real.

Connection:I get used a lot at my house to I have to do a lot of choirs at my house it is like I am cleaning the whole house by myself just like they used him.

Question:Why don't you run away from that lady's house and go somewhere else with your family so you are not a show puppet at her house anymore?

over a thousand hills i walk with you

The story is about the girl that lost her mom or her dad because of the terrible things that were happening in her country. She had to get a job to pay for a new house, to pay for her school and just to survive. She wanted to find a man to help her with all of that. I just read the rest of DreamQuake and Laura finally found Tziga and freed him from the dream palace and pub but the coming of dream catching is still a mystery to Laura and Tziga because they don't actually know how they got their powers in the first place. Every one was cheering and screaming when Tziga came back. I had two questions and a reaction.

My two questions are one, why didn't anyone know Tziga was missing in the first place, and two, why didn't anyone help Laura look for him?

My reaction was surprised because at first no one cared that Tziga was missing, but when he came back every one was cheering.

January's Sparrow

January's Sparrow is about this guy named January who is a slave and he gets beat by his owner. The owners wife died from giving birth to there daughter Sadie. Sadie has a HUGE obstacle because her dad doesn't like her because he says that she killed her mother.- Meghan:)

Monday, March 15, 2010

In DreamQuake, after a long journey from spring lake, to rock mountain, and to dream palace and parlor, Laura finally made it to her father Tziga. he was bieng held in the center of dream palace. She also found many people eating muffins and drinking tea. She headed up the stairs to investigate. she could see her father in the wrong building, thats why people were eating and drinking, because she was in the dream parlor. I have a question and a reaction.

My question is how can she mistake the dream parlor for the dream palace when they look almost completely different?

My reaction was surprised because she got the two buildings mixed up.

The Magic Poet

In the book Francisco listens to peoples day dreams. It makes him very tired listening to all their day dreams and trying to understand how they thought of all these things they want to be.

Connection: There was part in the book that Francisco said that his mother and him were trying to stay alive until they get mercy or until they die what ever comes first. He said he'd rather stay alive.

I would rather stay alive, too. But sometimes there are other people that don't give me mercy and try to kill me but my family has mercy for me and they help me out.

Reaction:I think the lady should let Francisco go live with his real family instead of keeping him trapped in that house.

Memories of Anne Frank 1-6 Jojo Gomez

Intro:
The book I'm reading is titled Memories of Anne Frank. The book is not just about Anne Frank. It has many different stories of other people who had the same problem in their childhood or life. This book was put together by a friend of Anne Frank. She was given permission from Frank to write this book of her life. She had Anne Frank diary to use for resources.

Summary:
Anne and Hannah were two ordinary girls. They were friends. Anne has been from home to home. Her step father and step mother ask her what happen to her mother and father but Anne doesn't say a word. Anne died just before her sixteen birthday. Anne and her family was hidden because of the Germans. When the war was attempted. She was determined to stay out of sight.
Hannah Goslar the age of thirteen was fun-loving but also very religious. she went to Hebrew school. Anne and Hannah were best friends but their relationship was getting hard because of the war between the Jews and Germans. Also being thirteen is harder then two little kids sitting next to each other at lunch.

Questions:
1. Why doesn't Anne like to talk about her birth parents?
2. Did Hannah and Anne relationship get better?

Prediction:
I believe that Anne is going to talk about her parents to her step parents in the future because it says she wants to tell them but then again she doesn't. I also think that Anne will run into other kids that been separated from their parents and family too.

Reaction:
When Anne Frank had to hide from the Germans I felt scared for her. It was a moment of silent inside the book for me. Also when i read and it said she died at the age of 16. I thought of being in her spot and I was like wow.

Dream Hunter

So far in dream hunter, the ranger has his eye on Tziga. He keeps his eye on him because he doesnt take his daugther and cousin Rose across the border.

My question so far in the chapters.
Why does the ranger keep his eye on Tziga?
Why doesn't Laura and Rose just go across the border themselves?

Mikaela Hughes :)

Thursday, March 11, 2010

I just read up to page 200 in DreamQuake and Laura is still looking for hier father and getting more clues. One day when Laura was walking on the spring path and found a cottage of a sight seer. Even though though she didn't know what happend toTziga, she some how did know that he was OK. I had 2 questions, and a reaction.

My 2 questions are why does Nown have to do everything the girl tells him, and why hasn't Laura and Rose been doing anything in the book.

My reaction was surprised because Nown has to do what the girl says even though her mom nor dad are rich.

That so far is what is happening in DreamQuake.

Dream Hunter

I am reading Dream Hunter. Its a good book so far.
This book is about Laura and Rose trying to get across the border. They are trying to become dream hunters. Dream Hunters are people who catch dreams. But there are rangers who guard the borders and they won't let Laura and Rose across the border.

My question is will Laura and Rose become dream hunters?
My other question is why wont they let them across the border?

over a thousand hills i walk with you

In part one Jeanne's parents were with her in the kitchen with her then they started talking about these people and they were bad. Then they heard a loud noise out side and when they waned to see who was is but when they went to the door to open it; this man was right there and they were scared the dad was right there and when the dad was going to say some thing they killed her dad. I thought that was very sad i felt very bad about every thing I think she is very strong I would of cry by now.

I think she is going to find a man to help her with her life and so they can live together for ever and they can have kids. That is what I think about what will happened in the book the other thing I like to is how she tells or write the story. The reaction I had was impressed because I didn't now that would happened in the kitchen I was very scared because I thought that she was going to die or the man was going to kill her.

One of the questions I had was Will she pay for her scholarship or will she stay a lone?

Will she find  another home for her and will she find the money to pay for the house and her college?

I feel bad for her because I think she is going to have a baby boy the main thing is that the bad people from the army killed her parents. I think they didn't have to kill her parents for no reason I think they did it for no reason just for fun. They don't want no one to kill there parents so why did they kill her family and her parents.

The Magic Poet

In this book their is a Cuban little boy that is a slave he works for a couple of rich people and the lady makes the boy call him mama and she shows him to all her friends like he is a animal.

How could he call that lady his mother even if she whipped me she couldn't make me call her my mother if she wasn't?

I just read the first one-hundred pages of the book DreamQuake and it is really good so far. It is about Tziga, a dream hunter, he takes good or bad dreams and makes them his own. One day he decided to share the dreams he found with the other people, but when he was on his way home, a ranger captured him and brought him to dream palace. Nobody noticed except his daughter Laura noticed. She journeyed almost across the whole world just to find and get her father back from the ranger. When they arrived back home, the whole tribe cheered for Laura after they discovered that she had saved her father.

I had two questions, one, why did Tziga even want to share the dreams, and two, how did the ranger capture him?

My prediction is that Tziga will end up being found by Laura.

Ask Me No Question

In the book Ask Me No Questions Aisha and her family are traveling to Canada to get their papers to become legal citizens. When they were on their way to Canada they ran out of gas and had to stop at a restaurant because ma was hungry. Ma was afraid to talk to people because she didn't speak English that well. So just in cast she told Nadira to order for her. But as a lady was coming toward her she got scared. Luckily, the lady turned the other way. When they got back into the truck Ma and Abba told Nadira to drive the car because Aisha was sleeping and she woke up thinking that she wasn't going to be alive. But then Nadira was jealous because they care for her because she want to be a doctor. But really they care about her to because she is the littlest daughter and she cries a lot.

My reaction about this story is that why would the grandfather want to steel a piece of paper and how come ma still haven't talked English.

Why does mom and dad only care about Nadira?
